Canon Gains ISO Validation Printing Certification – the First Quality Standard for Digital Printing

REIGATE, April 06, 2009 – Canon UK, world leader in digital imaging solutions, today announced its market leading imagePRESS printers have been awarded with ISO/CD certification for Validation Printing, establishing a global image quality standard for toner based presses.

The ISO/CD 12647–7 Validation Printing Certification awarded for the Canon imagePRESS range
The first output test for toner based systems proves the repeatability and quality of Canon’s digital prints
Canon worked closely with the Fogra institute to achieve the Validation Printing Certification
The ISO/CD 12647-7 Validation Printing Certification is the first to offer repeatability tests for image quality on toner systems over a set time period to ensure colour consistency is accurately maintained. The Certification was awarded to the Canon imagePRESS range after rigorous testing, providing print providers and their customers with the security and peace of mind from the combination of Canon’s market-leading products and a benchmark quality standard.

The International Organisation for Standardisation is the world’s largest developer and publisher of the ISO International Standards, comprising a network of national institutes in 160 countries to form a bridge between public and private sectors and meet the needs of business and of society in general.

Canon worked with the Fogra institute in Germany to achieve conformance with the ISO standard for the Canon imagePRESS C1+, the imagePRESS C6000 and the imagePRESS C7000VP, including the server and i1 Process Control colour management tool on semi-matt and gloss media.

Trevor Dodsworth, Head of Professional Print Marketing, Canon UK said: “Whilst customers appreciate the high-quality achieved from digital printing, they were still demanding a proofing standard from their print providers. The new ISO/CD 12647–7 gives us, for the first time, a recognisable Validation proof that allows print providers to achieve the highest possible results on the Canon imagePRESS range.

“Over the next few months we will be working towards establishing a European infrastructure to support and extend the knowledge to our customers. We can provide a complete package of professional services and support so customers can achieve the ISO/CD 12647–7 conformance for themselves and train their operators to maintain that standard in the future or we can use Canon engineers to ensure their presses are constantly maintained to the top level of performance.”

The new Validation certification will provide print providers with a competitive quality advantage, giving customers near contract quality print proofs and allowing them to measure digital prints against litho offset printing quality. Canon’s imagePRESS range is synonymous with quality output and the standard can now offer its customers a certified, reliable and a stable system to give them the peace of mind to achieve colour critical proofing.

Andreas Kraushaar (MSc), Head of Prepress Department at Fogra, said: “We are delighted to have worked with Canon as one of the first manufacturers to test conformance according to ISO/CD 12647-7 Validation Printing System. To reach this standard is not easy and involves a considerable degree of investment from the print manufacturer and we have seen many systems fail. For Canon to achieve this across all of its imagePRESS range is a very signific

EOS 500D

United Kingdom / Republic of Ireland, 3 April, 2009: Canon has announced that it has produced over 10 million consumer D-SLRs (digital single-lens-reflex) worldwide since the launch of the EOS 300D in 2003. Canon’s D-SLR products have achieved consecutive no.1 rankings in GfK’s consumer hitlist since 2004. Starting with the Canon EOS 300D, the market-leading spot was passed to the 350D in 2005, the EOS 400D in 2006 and the EOS 450D in 2008 and it is hoped the trend will continue following the recent release of the EOS 500D.

“Canon remains at the forefront of this consumer market growth with a market share of 40 per cent in Europe which we account for our commitment to consumer demand and our passion for high-quality image,” said Rainer Fuehres, Head of Canon Consumer Imaging (CCI), Canon Europe. “We hope that the release of the EOS 500D will further strengthen our market position this year.”

The increasing volume of consumer-orientated D-SLR models on the market has also driven an increase the volume of lens sales. Canon’s EF lens portfolio is now the world’s most extensive and popular range of D-SLR lenses, with over 60 models and 40 million sales worldwide.

Canon recently celebrated the 50th anniversary of Canon SLR (single lens reflex) cameras, having launched the Canon Flex in May 1959. Over 50 million Canon SLRs have been sold worldwide and Canon SLR cameras are accepted as the benchmark standard for amateur and professional photography.

Professional print quality for discerning photographers: the PIXMA Pro9000 Mark II

United Kingdom / Republic of Ireland, 25 March 2009: Canon today announces a new way for serious photographers to create professional-quality prints up to A3+ or 14” wide: the PIXMA Pro9000 Mark II. Replacing the PIXMA Pro9000, the PIXMA Pro9000 Mark II refines the design of its predecessor to offer faster, higher-quality monochrome printing, a wider range of supported media, and a new Ambient Light Correction feature.

Print for gallery or portfolio
Taking full advantage of Canon’s rich imaging heritage, the PIXMA Pro9000 Mark II creates vibrant and professional-quality prints. Default printing speeds in monochrome are now nearly three times faster than before, while accurate colour reproduction across a wide colour gamut is guaranteed by the 8-colour ChromaLife100 Single-Inks system. The addition of 16 bits per channel print capability, with 276 trillion different colours available, offers outstandingly smooth tonal gradations.

Tiny 2pl ink droplets are placed with precision, using Canon’s FINE print head technology. And because the PIXMA Pro9000 Mark II uses a system of single, individually replaceable inks, wastage is minimised.

Media for every occasion
The PIXMA Pro9000 Mark II provides photographers with an extensive choice of print media options. Canon’s own range of media includes Gloss, Semi-gloss and Matte Photo Papers, plus Fine Art media. Users can also load the PIXMA Pro9000 Mark II with a variety of specialist, third-party media – such as Baryta types, canvas, and numerous other Fine Art media from leading manufacturers including Canson, Hahnemühle, Innova, PCM Takeo and Pictorico. A flat paper path ensures that media up to 1.2mm thick remain pristine and crease-free.

Precision colour control
Included with the PIXMA Pro9000 Mark II is Canon’s Easy-PhotoPrint Pro software – a plug-in for Adobe Photoshop, Canon Digital Photo Professional and the bundled Adobe Photoshop Elements 6. Easy-PhotoPrint Pro allows photographers to batch print different images from Photoshop or Digital Photo Professional, simplifying the procedure by giving access to all the required print settings on one screen. When used with Canon’s Digital Photo Professional software, the plug-in enables Canon EOS photographers to print directly from RAW files without having to convert images to any intermediate formats. Users of other D-SLR cameras can use Adobe Photoshop Elements to enable RAW file conversion and printing.

New for the PIXMA Pro9000 Mark II is an Ambient Light Correction feature using Canon Kyuanos technology. Users can select the type of lighting under which a print will be displayed; the colours in the final print are then automatically adjusted to ensure that the displayed result looks just the way the photographer intended.
“Serious photography enthusiasts want their images to look good, wherever they’re used” said Rainer Fuehres, Head of Canon Consumer Imaging, Europe. “The PIXMA Pro9000 Mark II provides a complete one-box solution to that demand.”

Pricing and availability:
The PIXMA Pro9000 Mark II is available from June 2009 priced at £499.00 / €559.00 RRP inc. VAT.

Create and sell gallery-quality images: the PIXMA Pro9500 Mark II

United Kingdom / Republic of Ireland, 25 March 2009: Canon today announces a powerful new tool for professional photographers to create gallery-quality images for exhibition and sale. The PIXMA Pro9500 Mark II is a versatile, 10-colour pigment inkjet printer, capable of producing outstanding, long-lasting prints up to A3+ size or 14” wide.

Images as they were intended
For exceptional colour accuracy and gamut, the PIXMA Pro9500 Mark II uses a 10-colour pigment based single ink system as standard, including matte black and photo black, allowing photographers to print on gloss and matte media without the need for swapping ink tanks.

The right media – for any image
Finding the correct print media is crucial in turning an image into a saleable product. To maximise potential profit, the PIXMA Pro9500 Mark II prints to a comprehensive range of Canon and non-Canon media. Stunning, high-quality prints can be printed onto Canon high gloss media without bronzing or gloss differential; other supported Canon media includes Semi-gloss, Matte Photo Paper and Fine Art media.

The PIXMA Pro9500 Mark II supports ICC profiles for many specialist media. These include Baryta types, canvas, and numerous Fine Art media from leading brands such as Canson, Hahnemühle, Innova, Moab, Somerset, Crane, PCM and Pictorico. For additional flexibility you can create custom ICC profiles, using Canon’s Colour Management Tool Pro 2 software with selected X-Rite colour spectrophotometers.

The addition of 16 bits per channel print capability – with 276 trillion possible colours – offers outstandingly smooth tonal gradations in both colour and monochrome prints. Dedicated monochrome inks minimise problems such as colour casting, and allow photographers to reproduce a smoother range of neutral and grayscale tones.
New for the PIXMA Pro9500 Mark II is an Ambient Light Correction feature using Canon Kyuanos technology . Users can select the type of lighting under which a print will be displayed; the colours in the final print are then automatically adjusted to ensure that the displayed result looks just the way the photographer intended.

Prints that last
Print longevity is the key to selling or showing your images with confidence. The PIXMA Pro9500 Mark II uses Canon LUCIA pigment inks, which are specially designed to deliver long-lasting prints that retain their vibrancy for generations.

Designed for working photographers
Professional photographers can integrate the PIXMA Pro9500 Mark II directly into their workflow by using the included Canon Easy-PhotoPrint Pro plug-in, which allows printing directly from Adobe Photoshop and the supplied Adobe Photoshop Elements software . Canon EOS users can use the plug-in to print RAW files directly from Canon Digital Photo Professional software.
The PIXMA Pro9500 Mark II is made to accommodate the rigours of a professional photographer’s workload. Its sturdy design – built around a rigid 1.6mm thick steel chassis – endures heavy usage to deliver reliable, consistent performance.
“The PIXMA Pro9500 Mark II is for photographers who are serious about exhibiting and selling their images,” said Rainer Fuehres, Head of Canon Consumer Imaging Europe. “Even on high gloss media, results remain consistently stunning.”
