Units shipped in the quarter were 14.5 million, a decrease of 35% compared to the same period of last year and in line with our March 20, 2009 interim announcement of approximately 14 million units. Sales for the quarter were Euro 1,736 million, a decrease of 36% from a year ago. Sales decreased primarily as a result of continued weak consumer confidence and de-stocking in the retail and distribution channels.

Gross margin declined both year-on-year and sequentially, reflecting a change in the product mix, material write-offs, and exchange rate volatility.

Income before taxes for the quarter excluding restructuring charges was a loss of Euro 358 million, within the range announced on March 20, 2009 (loss of Euro 340 – 390 million).

„As expected, the first quarter of this year has been extremely challenging for Sony Ericsson due to continued weak global demand. We are aligning our business to the new market reality with the aim of bringing the company back to profitability as quickly as possible,” said Dick Komiyama, President, Sony Ericsson. „The management intends to pursue an additional cost saving program targeting a further annual operating expense reduction of Euro 400 million, to be completed by mid-2010.”

The company’s initial cost saving program targeting annual operating expense reductions of Euro 300 million by the end of the first half of 2009, including a workforce reduction of 2,000 headcount, has now been completed. A total of Euro 187 million restructuring charges have been recorded compared to the initial estimated costs of Euro 300 million.

In January 2009 an additional cost saving program was initiated to target annual operating expense reductions of Euro 180 million by the end of 2009. The cost of this program will be covered by the initial Euro 300 million restructuring costs announced in July 2008.

The additional cost saving program announced today will include a further reduction in the global workforce of approximately 2,000 people. It is estimated that new restructuring charges of Euro 200 million will be needed to complete this program.

As of March 31, 2009, Sony Ericsson retained a strong net cash position of Euro 1.1 billion.

Market share in the first quarter decreased and is now estimated to be around 6%, down two percentage points sequentially.

Sony Ericsson forecasts that the global handset market for 2009 will contract at least 10% from around 1,190 million units in 2008.

At Mobile World Congress in February 2009, Sony Ericsson announced a new consumer proposition, called ‚Entertainment Unlimited’ (EU), to build on Sony Ericsson’s leadership in music, imaging, gaming, content services, and applications to deliver unlimited opportunities for consumers. The company also announced the first Entertainment Unlimited phone with the concept name ‚Idou’ to be launched in the second half of 2009. The next EU announcement will take place on 28 May.

Light up your life with Sony Ericsson’s stylish new T707 mobile phone

Add a touch of glamour to your day with the stunning new T707 mobile phone from Sony Ericsson. This innovative phone radiates style and glamour with its unique, eye-catching light effects and gesture control to guarantee you will never be left in the dark!

Miami, USA – 26th March 2009 – Sony Ericsson today announced its latest mobile phone, the T707, with tennis star and style icon Maria Sharapova, who perfectly epitomises the phone’s sleek and elegant qualities.

The T707 truly interacts with the user – it lights up when you receive a call and you can personalise the light settings to each of your friends, so you always know who wants you. If you are too busy to answer, simply end the call with a wave of your hand over the screen – you can also do the same gesture to snooze the alarm – your very own magic wand!

“The T707 is my ultimate new accessory,” said Maria. “I am always on the go and I need a phone that is easy to use, and of course chic as well! I never miss a call with the eye-catching light effects and personalised pulsation settings and I love the fact that I can just wave my hand to mute a call using the gesture control. I can also use my practical and stylish Bluetooth™ Headset HBH-PV715 to take my calls, check my emails and blog to my website from the phone. It’s great to have a phone that looks good but also lets me keep up-to-date with everything I need.”

Perfect pixels for every pose
Coordinate the T707 to any outfit, as it comes in a rainbow range of three clam shells to suit every mood. Whatever you wear will be perfectly captured by the 3.2 megapixel camera, making sure that you stand out on screen as much as you do in real life. The photos can then be uploaded to your personal social networking site using the HTML web browser, so you and your friends can keep up to date wherever you are.

Customise your phone like your clothes
With the T707 you will never be left behind in the style stakes, as the 2.2 inch screen is waiting to be customised to your individual taste. The changing wallpaper themes will ensure that you are never caught wearing clashing colours! The theme also changes from day into evening, which is perfect if, like Maria, you need to match with everything from tennis whites to a little black dress.

Packed with extras, as one option is never enough…
This is one accessory you will never leave home without as the T707 packs in more extras than even your handbag. The FM radio and Bluetooth™ audio streaming will entertain you when you are out and about, and you can download music, games and ringtones at the touch of a button with PlayNow™ to ensure that boredom is something which happens to other people!

“The T707 is the next step in the style evolution from Sony Ericsson,” said Linda Schori, Global Marketing Business Manager for Style Category, Sony Ericsson. “Maria Sharapova is the perfect partner for us as she exemplifies not only elegance but also substance, just like the T707. It works hard and is also sleek, glamorous and desirable – a truly winning combination!”

Maria knows that all eyes will be on her this season and thanks to her new T707; she can rest assured that whatever she does, she will look stylish, glamorous and be in control of her life with just the wave of a hand.

Sony Ericsson Open in Miami puts Tennis on top of cars

Sony Ericsson takes the game to new heights with ‘Traffic Tennis’

Miami FL, United States – March 23, 2009 – To mark the start of the Sony Ericsson Open, 2009, ‘Traffic Tennis’ was staged using top-ranked tennis players Venus Williams and Andy Murray who rallied with each other while standing on the roofs of two vehicles, stuck in traffic on Ocean Drive, Miami. Traffic Tennis was set against the signature art deco backdrop of South Beach while onlookers marveled at the sights of tennis being played where they would not naturally expect it.

When asked about her experience, world number five, female player; Venus Williams commented: “The Sony Ericsson Open is one of the most entertaining and glamorous tournaments on the calendar. This is not only due to its location but also the activities that surround the tournament, taking tennis off the court and increasing the excitement.”

World number four, male player, Andy Murray said:”I always look forward to coming back to Miami and playing in the Sony Ericsson Open. It’s one of the most exciting tournaments on the calendar and events like these help generate a tremendous amount of exposure for our sport.”

Corporate vice president and head of global communications and PR, Aldo Liguori said: “Sony Ericsson is known as a challenger brand recognised for its passion and innovation. ‘Traffic Tennis’ perfectly shows we were able to take the game to a new scenario and audiences simultaneously, thus energising the total experience of the Sony Ericsson Open.”

The stunt involved modifying two SUVs with platforms and safety harnesses by a stunt rigger to the roof of the cars. The game was played on Ocean Drive to capture the imagination of South Beach and set against the backdrop of a world renowned art deco architecture hub to create an iconic image that captures the essence of 2009 Sony Ericsson Open; entertainment, glamour and innovation.

Sony Ericsson is able to activate the ‘lifestyle factor’ through the tournament, which in turn help to widen its appeal in the multimedia age and take tennis beyond the confines of the court to new audiences. At this year’s Sony Ericsson Open, attendees can experience the innovative design and functionality of Sony Ericsson products and accessories in the Experience booth and receive the latest Tennis updates through a text messaging program by texting ‘Tennis’ to 32391 to get daily tournament updates. Coco Walk and Mary Brickell Village will also see some action as Sony Ericsson extends the tennis theme into the nightlife of Miami. In addition to player appearances, there will be an opportunity to experience the latest Sony Ericsson mobile phones and receive special offers from Best Buy.

After a fantastic 2008 tournament with Nikolay Davydenko and Serena Williams both triumphing; 2009 is set to be another fantastic event as Serena attempts a record-breaking sixth crown. The 2009 Sony Ericsson Open will be played March 25 – April 5 at Crandon Park, Miami and features the world’s top men and women tennis players battling for a total prize fund of US$9 million.

Sony Ericsson is the title sponsor of the Sony Ericsson Open, the unofficial fifth grand slam. The sponsorship has enabled Sony Ericsson to engage with consumers in countries as diverse as Australia, Japan, Indonesia, Qatar, Russia, USA and Brazil while achieving its goal of energising their experience through the integration of mobile phone technology.

Entering the Korean market

To launch the Xperia™ X1 with Windows Mobile® and a WIPI Platform, Sony Ericsson Korea cooperated with SK Telecom, the distributor of the product, to customize the X1 in consideration of the local Korean customers. The result was the development of three new panels – “My smart panel,” “DAUM panel” and “My PC panel” and the localization of the “SPB panel” in Korean for the local user’s convenience. The sales of the Xperia™ X1 will start within March.

“My smart panel” is a wireless Internet service for smart phones developed by SKT, which provides users easy access to online services including mail, messenger and internet browsing. “DAUM panel” is a customized service by Sony Ericsson which gives users instant access to services found on the DAUM portal, such as mail, web search and T-story whilst “My PC panel” allows users to experience ubiquitous and individualized media services by connecting the mobile to the content and software of a PC through WiBro. In addition, the “SPB panel” is a great panel which gives quick finger-friendly access to everything you need in a second.

Specific to the Korean market, additional components and accessories including a battery with charger, a 4G micro SD card installed with the movie Spiderman 3 will accompany every purchase of the Xperia™ X1. The first 1,000 customers will get their names engraved on their X1 and a luxurious leather phone case for free, making it truly personalized.

“We are very excited to establish Sony Ericsson’s presence in Korea and firmly believe that we have the right product to offer to Korean consumers,” said Hirokazu Ishizuka, Corporate Vice President and Head of the Asia Pacific region. “Working closely with our strategic partner, SK Telecom, we will build the Sony Ericsson brand awareness and increase our mindshare within the marketplace.”
