Guangzhou Metro Corporation Works With IBM to Modernise Rapid Transit in China

Guangzhou Metro Corporation (GZ Metro) has selected IBM (NYSE:IBM) technology and services to improve the City’s rapid transit system serving more than two million passengers a day. IBM will help GZ Metro manage all of its IT and physical assets including four commuter lines, 60 stations and more than 116 kilometers of track.

Smart transportation systems, like GZ Metro, help improve safety and reliability, while reducing travel delays, emissions and fuel consumption. As part of the Guangdong Provincial Government’s Five-Year Development Plan (2008 to 2012), the government will improve Guangzhou City’s infrastructure to support the organisation of the 16th Asian Games, held next year. The investment program is aimed to turn the public transportation system into an environment-friendly, intelligent and digitalised transportation system.

Currently, GZ Metro’s various assets are estimated to be worth more than RMB 20 billion (US$2.9 billion). The efficiency of GZ Metro is dependent on complete visibility across all its assets in order to provide safe and uninterrupted railway services. Under the agreement signed in February 2009, GZ Metro is working with IBM to introduce an Integrated Asset Management (IAM) System as part of its modernisation efforts. The IAM system will be the first of its kind for China.

With multiple software applications installed, GZ Metro is currently only able to draw a partial view of its total assets. As a result, the company does not have the visibility it needs to achieve efficiency and on-time service. To provide safe and uninterrupted railway services, GZ Metro wanted to build an advanced, secure and reliable IT platform to manage its software, services and physical assets including tracks, carriages, advertising spots and shops in the train stations.

„With traffic congestion on the rise in cities across China, it has become critical to build smarter rail systems and governments are investing heavily in these projects,” said Marc Chapman, General Manager, Global Business Services, Greater China, IBM. „By having control over each asset across the entire rail system, Guangzhou Metro is able to improve safety and on time arrivals for passengers and commuters.”

For the implementation of the IAM platform, IBM Global Business Services will build a uniform asset classification and coding system for all assets, as well as integrate the operational and financial management processes in investment, construction, operation and asset maintenance — throughout the entire life cycle of asset management. The system will improve the GZ Metro’s transparency into their operational processes, which can enhance asset-related decision-making, asset service delivery and return on investment. This will contribute to GZ Metro’s business objective of improving efficiency and increasing asset uptime.

The IAM platform, powered by IBM Maximo software, will help GZ Metro improve maintenance procedures by integrating the overall work procedures with contract management, as well as monitor and manage the maintenance equipment. This will lower the operational maintenance cost while improving productivity and prolonging the lifespan of the equipment.

The IAM project is instrumental to supporting the GZ Metro’s expansion plan. In anticipation of a sharp increase in the number of passengers, the rapid transit railway operator is investing RMB 12 billion (US$1.76 billion) this year to expand the networks which will be able to operate nine commuter lines. As a result, GZ Metro’s daily passenger capacity will increase from two to four million.

Metro had evaluated the asset management offerings from IBM and several other international IT companies. IBM Global Business Services was chosen as the consultancy partner for its deep industry experience and extensive business and technology experience in asset management.

Lenovo Lays Stake on Prime Screen Real-Estate with Industry’s First Dual Screen Mobile Workstation

ThinkPad W700ds mobile workstation brings ultimate intersection of innovation and performance

Paris, France – January 6, 2009: Lenovo today is bringing users the highest levels of mobile workstation innovation and performance with the introduction of the ThinkPad W700ds mobile workstation. The ThinkPad W700ds gives users prime screen real-estate as the first mobile workstation in the industry with two screens. Lenovo combines a new balance of unique design with complex engineering and unparalleled performance to give users in the most demanding of fields such as digital content creation, oil and gas exploration, computer-aided design and photography, the ultimate mobile workstation.

“The ThinkPad W700ds dual screen mobile workstation challenged our international development team to engineer a notebook to fit the way workstation users work – in the office and on the road,” said Mark Cohen, vice president, Notebook Business Unit, Lenovo. “Bringing this level of innovation to the most extreme PC users required continually balancing size and functionality with keeping the PC cool and quiet. This mobile workstation is the result of where Lenovo innovation and performance intersect.”

To watch a video demonstration of the ThinkPad W700ds, click here.

The Power of Two
Because many workstation users typically work with two monitors, Lenovo designed the ThinkPad W700ds mobile workstation with two screens to accommodate their work habits while on-the-go and to eliminate the compromise of having only one display when operating in a mobile environment. Research has shown that extra screen real-estate with multiple monitors helps maximize user productivity versus single display solutions.1 Measuring almost 40 percent of the 17-inch primary screen, the 10.6-inch second screen gives users extra screen real-estate, measuring approximately the size of a Lenovo IdeaPad S10e netbook.

The second screen easily slides out from the PC cover behind the primary screen, and it can also be adjusted to fit a user’s viewing angle by up to 30 degrees, similarly to how a car’s rear view mirror tilts. This unique feature and test of engineering only adds a few millimeters in additional thickness to the mobile workstation over its predecessor, the ThinkPad W700 mobile workstation.

The second screen complements the primary optional 400-nit WUXGA display, which provides up to twice the brightness of earlier ThinkPad mobile workstations. The primary screen’s 72 percent wide color gamut enables more than 50 percent greater color intensity for an uncompromised viewing experience.

Intersection of Innovation and Performance
With its second screen, the ThinkPad W700ds mobile workstation builds on the breakthrough capabilities offered in the ThinkPad W700 mobile workstation that included the industry’s first built-in digitizer and color calibrator for mobile workstations.

Ideal for digital content creators and users, the optional digitizer provides high resolution, pressure high resolution, pressure sensitive control of the primary screen, the primary and the secondary screen or a specific defined area of either screen. Select models also come with a color calibrator that quickly and automatically adjusts the screen’s color to give true-to-life images and rendering 2D and 3D images, which are important items for digital content creators.

Professional photographer, Phil Borges commented, “The Lenovo ThinkPad W700 is the ultimate in portable workstations for photographers. The built in calibration and the ultra bright monitor make it possible for me to do work on the road that I would normally have to wait to do in the studio. The W700’s two built-in hard drives make backing up photos while I’m on the road or in the studio a snap. Normally the process takes me a couple of hours, but with the W700 backup time is cut in half. Now the new ThinkPad W700ds takes it one step further with a second screen that allows me to move all my working palets to the second screen and gives me more real estate on the main screen for photo editing.”

The ThinkPad W700ds mobile workstation gives users the latest technologies that are essential for work in data and graphics-intensive fields such as computer-assisted design, computer-aided manufacturing and others. Top processing and graphics performance includes choices of Intel® mobile quad core and extreme processors with optional dual hard drives with RAID configurations and choices of NVIDIA® Quadro FX mobile graphics. The mobile workstation offers up to 8 GB of high speed DDR3 memory and choices of solid state drive storage and traditional hard disk drives for a maximum of 960 GB of possible total storage. The mobile workstation also carries certifications from more than 20 independent software applications.

“The Lenovo ThinkPad W700ds mobile workstation is a great example of the type of innovation that can be developed utilizing Intel’s most advanced processors,” said Mooly Eden, vice president and general manager, Mobile Platforms Group, Intel. “The Intel® Core™ 2 Extreme quad-core processor delivers the ultimate computing performance for mobile professionals, and we are very pleased that Lenovo’s newest mobile workstation runs on this advanced technology.”

The ThinkPad W700ds mobile workstation offers a rich, customizable multimedia experience with optional ™ DVD burner/player and high speed UDMA compact flash reader, support for Dual Link DVI, Display Port and VGA, a 7-in-1 multicard reader and five USB ports. In addition to WiFi, for connectivity beyond the office, select models support WiMAX. Security features include an optional fingerprint reader, a smartcard reader and hard drives with full-disk encryption.

The powerhouse mobile workstation also balances functionality with staying cool and quiet. Lenovo engineered a dual thermal solution to keep the ThinkPad W700ds mobile workstation running as cool as ThinkPad notebooks and quieter than the ambient noise in a typical office.

Pricing and Availability
The ThinkPad W700ds mobile workstation is available immediately through Lenovo business partners. Pricing is available on request.

“Lockdown Now PC.” Lenovo Locks Out Thieves from ThinkPad Notebook PCs

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, NC – November 25, 2008: Lenovo (HKSE: 992) (ADR: LNVGY) today announced plans to bring customers a new security defense against unauthorized data access on Lenovo ThinkPad notebooks. The Lenovo Constant Secure Remote Disable feature lets users send a simple text message command via a cell phone to render their PC useless to unauthorized users when the notebook is lost or stolen. Lenovo worked with Phoenix Technologies (Nasdaq: PTEC), a leader in embedded technologies that improve the user experience, to develop this capability. Lenovo’s Remote Disable feature will be available on select ThinkPad notebooks equipped with mobile broadband1 starting in 1Q 2009.

According to the 2008 CSI Computer Crime and Security Survey2, 42 percent of computer attacks and incidents among U.S. organizations in both private and public sectors occurred as a result of notebook PC theft. Lenovo’s new Remote Disable dramatically enhances the security of a lost or stolen ThinkPad notebook PC by speeding up the time it takes to lock the PC, helping to prevent unauthorized access to the computer’s data.

To activate Remote Disable, users create a simple text message command such as “lockdown now PC” or “PC shut off” that can be used if a notebook PC is lost or stolen. A user sends the kill command to the ThinkPad notebook via cell phone to the PC’s onboard mobile broadband service and the computer becomes inoperable3. If the PC is turned off when a user sends a kill command, the PC will automatically disable the next time it registers on the network. Users also receive a confirmation text message that validates when the Remote Disable technology has been successfully executed. To reactivate the disabled PC, a user enters his or her pre-set passcode created during notebook startup.

„Remote Disable dramatically reduces the anxiety and waiting people often experience when they’ve been the victim of a lost or stolen notebook PC,” said Bob Galush, vice president, Software and Peripherals Marketing, Lenovo.” Through our work with Phoenix, we are able to reduce customers’ security risks and potential exposure of their confidential data when their ThinkPad notebook is lost or stolen. Combined with features like built-in biometric fingerprint readers, full hard drive encryption and embedded security chips, Lenovo ThinkPad notebooks offer the latest industry-leading PC security technologies.”

Pricing and Availability4
Lenovo’s Remote Disable is included in the price of the notebook at no additional charge. It will be available 1Q 2009 on select ThinkPad notebooks that are enabled for mobile broadband1. Remote Disable will be supported worldwide wherever cellular phone systems support GSM (Global System for Mobile communications) SMS (Short Message Service) text message transmission.

LENOVO TURNS THE LIGHTS DOWN LOW WITH POWER MANAGER ON NEW THINKCENTRE PC

Basingstoke, UK – October 29, 2008: Lenovo today announced its greenest, most secure and most manageable ThinkCentre desktop PC yet, the M58/M58p, with Power Manager1, a ThinkVantage technology that allows PC users to control their electricity consumption remotely, and available for the first time ever on a ThinkCentre PC.

Power Manager allows customers to save energy and lower electricity costs by enabling system administrators to monitor and remotely control the amount of electricity used by all Power Manager enabled desktops in a PC fleet. For example, PCs can be programmed to shut down evenings or weekends. Through the use of Power Manager and Intel®vPro™technologies, the ThinkCentre M58p provides the user with the lowest total cost of ownership of any ThinkCentre.

Bryant University in Rhode Island, a long time ThinkCentre customer, will be one of the first organizations to purchase the ThinkCentre M58/M58 for its fleet. “Bryant is proud to be a partner in innovative technology with Lenovo, the recognized leader in exceptionally engineered PCs,” said Art Gloster, vice president of information services at Bryant University. “The ThinkCentre M58 desktop will allow Bryant to support more secure and more energy efficient operations and enable faster information processing.”

Further solidifying the ThinkCentre M58/M58p as one of the industry’s leading “green” computing solutions is the gold status achieved from the Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool organization, or EPEAT. Lenovo has a total of 24 ThinkCentre desktops that have become EPEAT Gold certified. EPEAT was created to provide a green standard for electronics purchases. The M58/M58p has also passed the stringent testing of GREENGUARD Environmental Institute, which probed for the presence of up to 2,000 potentially harmful contaminants, in addition to receiving the GREENGUARD Certification for Children & Schools, which takes into account children’s higher sensitivity to pollutants.

The ThinkCentre M58/M58p is also the first ThinkCentre PC to support Hardware Password Manager, which allows for oversight of user, supervisory, BIOS and HDD passwords. HPM is available in April, 2009 and requires a separate software purchase. Previous ThinkCentre versions of a password manager only allowed for password management at the software level. Additionally, the user can disable/enable USB and PS2 ports for complete “security” peace of mind.

“The ThinkCentre M58/M58p was designed specifically for the rigorous demands of large enterprises in the business and education world. The design goal for the M58/M58p was to be the greenest, most secure, most manageable and quietest ThinkCentre ever, said Dilip Bhatia, executive director, global desktop marketing, Lenovo. “Our customers will benefit from our advanced technologies such as Power Manager, support for Hardware Password Manager and other features.”

Available in three form factors – Tower, Small Form Factor and Ultra Small Form Factor – the ThinkCentre M58p offers top performance with Intel® vPro™processing technology: Intel® Core™2 Duo E8x00 or Core™2 Quad Q9xx0. The ThinkCentre M58 offers the Intel® Q45 chipset with ICH10-DO. The ThinkCentre M5/M58p is also quieter and cooler than any previous ThinkCentre: across all form factors, it is up to six decibels quieter than the ThinkCentre M57/M57p and the hard drive and the processor power module run six and eleven percent cooler, respectively, than the M57/M57p. Embracing new technology, the M58/M58p is the first ThinkCentre with onboard Displayport.2

The ThinkCentre M58/M58p comes with a limited, three-year onsite warranty with next business day service.3 End of life disposal solutions round out Lenovo’s commitment to green computing and preserving the environment. Customers can take advantage of Lenovo’s Asset Recovery Service and benefit from a convenient process to recover maximum value and dispose of retired assets. By doing so, customers may be able to receive cash back to offset the costs of future PC purchases, further lowering their total cost of ownership.

Lenovo’s new ThinkCentre M58/M58P is being showcased at Educause, one of America’s largest, IT focused education conferences, October 28-30. For a demo and more information at the show, visit Lenovo at Educause booth 1133.

Pricing and Availability
The ThinkCentre M58/M58p is available immediately in Tower and Small Form factor versions, while the Eco Ultra Small Form Factor will be available in December, 2008. All products will be available through business partners. Monitor is sold separately. Prices available on request.
