Choice Hotels Selects HP Security Appliance to Automate Compliance Processes, Reduce Risk

HP today announced that Choice Hotels International, Inc. selected the HP Compliance Log Warehouse (CLW) 2.0 to address regulatory demands and reduce risk to its business.

HP CLW 2.0 provides real-time collection, storage and retrieval of network activity logs to detect unusual events that could lead to a security breach. The data management appliance consolidates event logs across the enterprise – applications, databases and unstructured data – to provide a single view of activity within a network.

Choice Hotels, one of the largest lodging franchisors in the world, selected HP CLW with the primary goal of automating network analysis and compliance reporting to meet Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) regulations. More than 5,800 Choice brand hotels worldwide rely on HP CLW to identify internal violations and external threats in real time.

The CLW allows Choice Hotels to retain and query up to one year of its event logs, which is the requirement for compliance set by PCI DSS.

“HP Compliance Log Warehouse enables Choice Hotels to more easily identify malicious network activity, protect intellectual property and increase productivity at a lower cost to the business than the manual systems that we previously relied on,” said Chad Mason, director, Test Engineering, Choice Hotels. “With an intuitive user interface and simple reporting, we are able to monitor, manage and gain unmatched insight into a high volume of event logs from a variety of sources that support sensitive consumer transactions throughout the organization.”

Based on industry-standard HP Integrity technologies, HP CLW offers advanced configuration tools on an easy to deploy and manage appliance platform.

HP CLW eases regulatory pressures while lowering total cost of ownership

Part of the HP Secure Advantage portfolio, HP CLW 2.0 collects, stores and analyzes data created by a myriad of systems in an enterprise. These include application logins, failed login attempts and software changes to management logs.

As a result, customers can automate compliance reporting to meet a variety of industry and government standards, including Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX), the Heath Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and the Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council standard (FFIEC). In addition, powerful clustering technologies in the HP CLW enable systems to be easily scaled to meet increasing data retention needs.

“Today’s regulations often include capturing event-based data, requiring companies to begin or expand their approach to log management,” said Jon Oltsik, senior analyst, Enterprise Strategy Group. “HP Compliance Log Warehouse offers a complete log management solution that ensures visibility throughout the organization – simply and cost-effectively – providing comprehensive insight into operations and security events, while helping organizations meet increasingly challenging regulatory demands.”

The HP CLW appliance also features interoperability with McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator (ePO) software, used today as the single security management platform for many enterprises. The combination of the McAfee ePO platform with the features and storage density of HP CLW provides a broader, comprehensive view of network activity in the enterprise.

The combined solution simplifies problem reporting and determination while enabling users to meet compliance regulations. Users of both products will benefit from advanced daily audit reporting capabilities, faster search through stored log data, and options to take action by adjusting security policies.

Pricing and availability(1)

HP Compliance Log Warehouse 2.0 is available worldwide with pricing that starts at $125,000 for one appliance (node), $269,000 for a three-node configuration and $699,000 for a 10-node configuration. Version 2.0 is available now for all customers of the current product, at no additional cost.

Citrix and HP Infrastructure Virtualizes 1,500 Servers to Handle Four Times as Many Sales Per Second, Boosting Business Efficiency

Tesco (LSE: TSCO), Britain’s leading supermarket chain, has announced pioneering updates to its mission-critical Real Time Sales (RTS) systems, virtualizing key business applications with Citrix® XenServer™ running on HP ProLiant BL680c G5 blade servers. With infrastructure from Citrix (NASDAQ:CTXS) and HP (NYSE:HPQ) in place, Tesco has increased its RTS capacity by 75 percent, handling 1,500 sales-related messages per second – catering to the critical nature of the RTS systems and creating room for growth. This is a major milestone in Tesco’s plans to virtualize its entire server infrastructure.

Tesco began investigating virtualization as an alternative to adding more physical servers to handle its growing capacity demands as well as fulfilling its community commitment to reduce carbon emission levels. While adding physical servers would require an increase in power and cooling, virtualization has better equipped Tesco to hit its target of reducing carbon emissions from its UK datacenters by 20 percent.

“After conducting a major evaluation of virtualization providers, we went with Citrix based on the strength of the Xen® technology, the ability XenServer has to provide high levels of performance for heavy duty 64-bit applications, its licensing model and its UK-based engineering team – decisions that have already paid off for us,” said Nick Folkes, IT director at Tesco. “The virtualized RTS environment uses less than half of the energy of the physical bare metal equivalents, which supports our CO2 targets and means we have already saved a significant amount on our electricity bills. We’re running far more efficiently and the ongoing management of the environment is much simpler. While our primary goal in working with Citrix and HP was to create a more flexible IT infrastructure, the consolidation benefits are significant.”

After the success of the initial project to virtualize RTS, Tesco has continued to deploy XenServer for its major server consolidation project. Citrix is working closely with Tesco to virtualize 1,500 physical servers on XenServer, including 80 Citrix® XenApp™ servers. This is already bringing greater efficiencies to the way applications are delivered to each Tesco store. Tesco is aiming for a conservative 10:1 consolidation ratio for physical to virtual servers and is hitting 70 percent CPU utilization on the servers, versus the previous six percent. From an operational perspective, Tesco has been able to utilize the XenMotion™ live migration feature of XenServer to migrate virtual machines to other physical hardware, with zero downtime, allowing patches and updates without disrupting users. Subsequently, Tesco has been able to remove its clustering back-up technologies and replace them with virtual servers. And, since XenMotion does not tie the resilience to a particular platform, Tesco has reduced its back-up server to live server ratio from 1:2 to 1:6.

XenServer is running on 64-bit HP ProLiant BL680C G5 blade servers with HP StorageWorks XP24000 SANs for enterprise-wide storage. HP’s four-socket, four-core machines for blade servers were a clear differentiator for Tesco at the time of purchase. Resilience through the solution ensures there is no single point of failure, which is essential for a business-critical application like RTS. And because Citrix licenses for advanced virtualization management capabilities are charged per server instead of per socket, Tesco is not penalized for using larger blade servers.

“RTS is a mission-critical system for Tesco with very high throughput of transactions based on Microsoft® IIS, BizTalk and SQL, so it requires the highest standards in processing power,” said John Glendenning, vice president, OEM sales, at Citrix. “Virtualization is key to providing a cost-effective, efficient and future-proof datacenter, and XenServer has been key to helping Tesco achieve its ambitions for a virtualized environment that supports mission-critical systems. The Citrix Delivery Center approach has enabled Tesco to create a customized virtualization strategy, using XenServer and HP for integrated server virtualization and XenApp and XenServer for the most efficient delivery of applications to stores across the country. The strategy is helping Tesco achieve its operational objectives – ultimately, it helps Tesco provide a better service to its customers.”

“Tesco can achieve immediate cost savings and long-term business growth goals by virtualizing their key business applications with HP BladeSystem Servers running Citrix XenServer,” said Jim Ganthier, vice president, Marketing, ESS Infrastructure Software and BladeSystem, HP. “The combination of HP BladeSystems and Citrix technology helps companies like Tesco strategically spend and carefully prioritize their technology investments – a critical task in the current economy.”

The Citrix solution dynamically provisions both virtual and physical servers, resulting in increased IT responsiveness and agility by enabling capacity on-demand, and the ability to dynamically manage provisioning for disaster recovery and business continuity. In addition, XenServer is optimized for XenApp, providing customers with enhanced scalability and faster performance for Windows application delivery running in a virtualized environment.

Citrix and HP have been collaborating since March 2008 to help customers deploy and manage virtualized environments faster and more easily than ever before.

HP Delivers Solutions to Change the Economics of Technology

New offerings help customers manage downturn and thrive in recovery

HP today announced new products, solutions and services that enable organizations to address the short-term cost reductions required by today’s challenging economy, while laying the groundwork to exit the downturn stronger and more competitive.

Economic downturns can more than double the likelihood that a business significantly changes its industry ranking, and those that make it into the top quartile during a downturn typically sustain their market premium for an average of three years.(1)

Technology plays a major role in determining an organization’s success before, during and after a downturn. In a 2007 survey, 99 percent of chief executive officers said technology is integral to the success of their companies.(2) Additionally, in a new global study, 38 percent of respondents indicated they see the current economic climate as an opportunity to restructure their technology environments for the future.(3)

“Winning CIOs are focused on both strategic cost reductions and supporting long-term business growth,” said Ann Livermore, executive vice president, Technology Solutions Group, HP. “It’s not about spending more: best-in-class IT organizations spend about half as much as the average company on technology as a percentage of revenue. Instead, they strategically spend and prioritize technology investments. HP offers an unprecedented range of solutions to help organizations emerge stronger when the economy recovers.”

HP’s new hardware, software and services allow organizations to change how they produce, distribute and consume technology resources by:

Standardizing, optimizing and automating technology to deliver short-term cost reductions;
Prioritizing new technology investments based on business value; and
Adopting flexible sourcing options to keep critical projects running and align costs to actual use.
Standardize, optimize and automate

New HP StorageWorks Storage-Area Network (SAN) Virtualization Solutions help customers simplify the provisioning, management and optimization of virtualized server and storage environments. The new HP StorageWorks Enterprise Virtual Array 6400 and 8400 (EVA6400 and EVA8400) cut storage administration costs by up to 50 percent.(4)

The enhanced HP SAN Virtualization Services Platform 2.1 (SVSP 2.1) is a network-based storage virtualization solution that increases available storage capacity. It also streamlines storage operations by reducing the time required for migration, replication, backup and bringing new applications into production. Solutions like the SVSP 2.1 allow customers to reduce storage acquisition costs by up to 50 percent, according to market research firm IDC.(5)

Enhanced HP Data Protector software and services provide one data protection solution for all physical and virtual environments. HP Data Protector is easy to use, provides a wide variety of backup options and supports de-duplication and other backup services. This is the industry’s most comprehensive protection for virtual environments and flexible data reduction options, delivering up to 70 percent cost savings.(6)

Prioritize technology investments

As part of its Applications Management Services portfolio, EDS, an HP company, is now offering clients the option of tiered levels of service, which lower the cost of running less-critical applications while maintaining the highest service levels for critical applications. This flexible approach to managing services helps maximize the business value of applications and can reduce overall application maintenance costs by up to 40 percent.(7)

New Consolidation and Virtualization ROI services can validate the expected savings and return on investment from technology projects. The risks of long project approval and implementation cycles are minimized, so customers can move quickly to adjust to the changing economy, while aligning technology investments with business growth objectives.

Multi-Tiered Hybrid Design is a new service that helps customers design an entire data center facility to more accurately reflect the different infrastructure and availability requirements of the business. Often, an enterprise data center is built to a single specification to meet the most exacting standard, even though this is not needed for all systems. By designing a “hybrid” data center with two (or more) tiers of service, data center capital costs can be reduced by 15 to 25 percent.(8)

Adopt flexible sourcing

An enhanced suite of EDS infrastructure services helps reduce costs and create efficiencies while offering predictable pricing. EDS’ enhanced Managed Services give clients more sourcing choices and control through a set of modular, standard packages that provide fast implementation and rapid client value. The offerings cover server and storage operations, service desk, flexible computing and managed messaging.

HP also offers flexible financing and leasing options through HP Financial Services. A new HP white paper released this month shows how chief information officers can help chief financial officers ease the pain of a tough economy by choosing advanced strategies such as technology life cycle management through leasing.

HP Insight Remote Support software helps SMBs save time and money with simple, reliable and around-the-clock remote support. The software provides a direct link between SMBs and their HP solution providers, delivering continuous, automated and secure remote monitoring and fault detection services. Small and Midsize Businesses Reduce Downtime and Costs with HP Insight Remote Support

HP Total Care discount and financing solution also unveiled

HP today broadened its Total Care portfolio with extensions to the HP Insight Remote Support software family to provide simple, reliable and around-the-clock remote support for small and midsize businesses (SMBs).

The new software provides a direct link between SMBs and their HP solution providers, delivering continuous, automated and secure remote event monitoring and fault detection services.

HP Insight Remote Support generates service dispatches for hardware issues detected on HP servers and storage, without the active involvement of staff or support phone calls. As a result, customers avert potential disruptions, saving time and money through faster issue resolution and reduced infrastructure downtime.

HP server and storage availability with HP Insight Remote Support is restored an average of 20 percent faster due to quicker problem detection, better diagnosis and more rapid initiation of repair activities. Cases detected and diagnosed through remote monitoring have a near 100 percent first-time fix rate due to the availability of accurate, detailed diagnostics.

HP also unveiled Total Care Business Solutions, offerings composed of HP ProLiant and HP BladeSystem servers, HP StorageWorks storage and HP ProCurve networking. These affordably priced technology packages are configured and tested to help SMB customers lower investment costs and simplify deployment.

Discounts up to 47 percent are available for customers in the United States, Europe and the Middle East on select models of servers and storage bundles. SMB customers in the United States also can receive rebates on discounted server bundles with the new Total Care Access Card.

The new solutions and promotional offers build on HP’s Total Care commitment to address critical concerns for SMBs – capturing cost savings and reducing risks of costly business disruptions.

“HP is making it easier for customers to purchase technology to remain competitive and emerge stronger,” said Duncan Campbell, vice president, Adaptive Infrastructure & Small and Midmarket Business, HP. “These new solutions build on HP’s commitment to prioritize the top priorities of cost-conscious SMBs: management, protection and business growth.”

HP Insight Remote Support

HP Insight Remote Support is available at no additional cost to customers with a valid warranty on HP technology, an HP Care Pack Service or HP contractual support agreement. The software supports HP servers and storage running Microsoft Windows®, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server from Novell, and Novell Open Enterprise Server for Netware and Linux.

„Over the past year, SMB customers are looking to mitigate both costs and risk, while the need for remote support tools has dramatically increased,” said Matt Healy, analyst, IDC. “Offerings such as HP Insight Remote Support help address the needs of a market that significantly benefits from doing more with less.”

The solution collects configuration information from each of these hardware devices to proactively resolve problems. The software monitors the hardware to determine if a failure has occurred or a potential problem exists.

“Insight Remote Support ultimately saves us time and money by resolving issues faster and detecting problems to avoid disruption of our business operations,” said John Ponzo, IT analyst, Regional Transportation Commission of Washoe County, Nev. “The benefits of this new software allow for reduced downtime, and if hardware issues occur, we are able to restore and minimize our downtime.”

Pricing and availability

HP Insight Remote Support is available for customers worldwide beginning today. The software is available for download at http://www.hp.com/go/insightremotesupport.
