KODAK THERMOFLEX Narrow Platesetter Helps The Label Shoppe Grow Business, Revenue and Customer Satisfaction

When Rudolph Gaytan needed a seamless way to produce labels in house for his family owned and operated snack food manufacturing operation, Gaytan Foods, he founded The Label Shoppe in City of Industry, Calif. Launched in 1991, the in plant printing division was the perfect complement to the family’s larger snack food manufacturing operation, and it was an idea that stuck, gaining the business notoriety and attracting the attention and business of its food customers. As outside orders for labels and tags began to pour in, The Label Shoppe needed a way to improve print quality and plate consistency without sacrificing customer service and support. With its new KODAK THERMOFLEX Narrow Platesetter, the Label Shoppe does both—and then some.

“Producing our labels digitally has become priority one,” says Ryan Gaytan, son of founder Rudolph Gaytan and Vice President of The Label Shoppe. “Thanks to Kodak’s digital printing technologies, we have been able to turn prepress into a controlled, digital manufacturing process, making it easier to enhance the quality of flexographic printing, reduce cycle times, and improve process control by eliminating variables in our plate manufacturing process.”

As the ideal choice for narrow web printers and print shops, the KODAK THERMOFLEX Narrow Platesetter combines repeatability with production proven reliability to deliver consistent, high quality print, and improved press performance for digital flexographic and letterpress plates. For The Label Shoppe, that means enhanced automation and a whole lot more, including a more reliable and consistent plate sent to the plate room on a daily basis.

The KODAK THERMOFLEX Narrow Platesetter provides maximum flexibility for accommodating a wide range of media sizes and thicknesses from a variety of suppliers. What’s more, its small footprint, easy to use KODAK TIFF Front End Software, and universal workflow connectivity make it an easy fit for printers, trade shops and converters utilizing any type of printing technology.

Kodak VP Kevin Joyce Promotes Power of Targeted Print Communications in Integrated Marketing Campaigns

In today’s competitive environment, marketers look for creative ways to build one-to-one relationships with prospects and customers, and the process often starts with customizing content to reach target audiences. Print is a powerful vehicle to deliver effective communications. As a component of an integrated multimedia marketing campaign, print delivers content that’s truly relevant to an audience—and generates greater return on marketing investment (ROMI). That was the message delivered by Kodak’s Kevin Joyce at the DMNews Global Creative Jam in New York City on March 19.

“As part of an integrated campaign, print remains one of the most vital tools for marketing and communications,” said Joyce, Worldwide Vice President, Sales and Marketing, Digital Printing Solutions, Kodak. “Digitally printed pieces, personalized to each recipient, contribute to greater response for a multimedia communications campaign that may include web, email and other components. By offering these integrated services, print service providers become even more valuable to their customers as marketing services providers.”

Joyce also discussed the value of targeted print communications, and how the ability to create tailored messages provides marketers with opportunities to leverage CRM data. “Individuals now control from whom and what kind of information they are willing to receive; they ‘permit’ communication. Customer information enables the development of pertinent one-to-one marketing that increases response rate and revenue. Digital printing technology makes it possible for marketers to move from mass communication to mass customization,” added Joyce.

Kodak’s wide range of digital printing and campaign management solutions enable marketers to develop communications tools that elevate the benefits of one-to-one marketing. For example, the KODAK NEXPRESS Dimensional Clear Dry Ink provides marketers with enhanced capabilities to create 3D raised printing that creates tactile effects. In addition, marketers can generate personalized URLs as part of a multimedia campaign using the KODAK INSITE Campaign Manager.

The DMNews Global Creative Jam centered on the value of taking creative marketing risks, focusing on both the critical importance of standing out in the market, as well as the practical issues that can derail a creative execution.

KODAK PF-N Non Process Plates Help Newspaper Printers Increase Efficiency, Reduce Costs

Since installing thermal CTP platesetters and workflow software from Kodak, newspaper customers have experienced benefits beyond their expectations. Newspaper printers incorporating solutions such as KODAK PF-N Non Process Plates and KODAK PRINERGY Workflow Software are realizing significant cost savings, as well as improved efficiency and image quality.

Alana Schweitzer, Publisher of Battlefords Publishing Ltd. News Optimist of North Battleford, Saskatchewan purchased a digital solution from Kodak to increase automation and save on labor and energy usage costs. The solution consists of the KODAK TRENDSETTER NEWS 70 Thermal Platesetter with KODAK PF-N Non Process Plates, KODAK PRINERGY EVO Workflow, and KODAK PREPS Plus Imposition Software.

“By eliminating chemicals and film, our process is more economical, more environmentally friendly, and more efficient,” said Schweitzer. “We’ve cut our developing and imaging time in half and the quality is dramatically improved. We’re using less ink and seeing much tighter registration.”

The potential of reduced operating costs, improved efficiency and greater image quality led Jeff Phillips, Operations Manager at San Diego Daily Transcript to invest in KODAK TRENDSETTER NEWS 50 Platesetters with KODAK PF-N Non Process Plates, KODAK PREPS Imposition Software, KODAK PRINERGY EVO Workflow and KODAK STACCATO Screening.

“Compared to a lot of operations, we have a smaller facility and more modest budget. We were intrigued by the compact footprint and cost effectiveness of the solutions from Kodak, and are confident they will give us the robust performance we require,” said Phillips. “I’m sure there are a lot of similar newspapers that could benefit from using these solutions.”

Anticipating an installation this month, Phillips is confident that the addition of KODAK PF-N Non Process Plates will create a significant reduction in operating costs.

“CTP is substantially less expensive and more efficient than our previous operation, and should save us $36,000 a year,” said Phillips. “We’re eliminating film and developer, and by eliminating steps in the process, we’re reducing necessary production time.”

Phillips was impressed with the noticeable difference in image quality visible on test runs, and also anticipates a decline in the environmental impact of the publication’s operations.

“It will be nice to do away with the potential hazards, and we’re expecting to cut ink usage 10 to 20 percent with STACCATO Screening,” said Phillips.

The Union Democrat in Sonora, California received Best of Show honors in the Inland Press Association’s 2009 Print Quality Competition for black-and-white reproduction in the under 15,000 circulation print category. The newspaper also earned Runner-up honors for color reproduction in the same category. Rick Quillen, Operations Manager for The Union Democrat, attributes much of the publication’s success in image quality to working with KODAK Solutions.

“We had performance issues with our previous equipment and when we moved in October of 2007, we converted to KODAK Solutions,” said Quillen. “We purchased CTP equipment and our process has been much better with Kodak’s plates. The new system also really made a difference in the quality of the photos and overall color quality. We are very pleased to be recognized with this award.”

The Union Democrat has also seen cost savings and improved efficiency as a result of incorporating KODAK TRENDSETTER NEWS 50 Platesetters with KODAK PF-N Non Process Plates and KODAK PRINERGY EVO Workflow into its operations.

“We’ve had a problem-free experience with Kodak, and to have that kind of record is really unbelievable,” said Quillen.

Western Oregon Web Press purchased two KODAK TRENDSETTER NEWS 50 Platesetters with KODAK NS Digital Newspaper Plates, as well as KODAK PRINERGY EVO Workflow Software, KODAK PREPS Imposition Software and KODAK STACCATO Screening. According to Marty Leopard, IT Manager at Western Oregon Web Press—a newspaper printer in Albany, Oregon—Kodak’s products delivered more than anticipated.

“We’ve seen a reduction in our output error, increased quality and speed of throughput, and greater consistency. All the things Kodak said PRINERGY EVO Workflow would deliver – it’s done and more,” said Leopard.

The addition of STACCATO Screening produced results that have caught the attention of others as well. “We’ve really dialed up our color output, and our customers have noticed that the STACCATO Screening has provided higher quality than dot screening,” said Leopard. “We’re learning more about the benefits the more we get into it.”

Its success with KODAK Unified Workflow Solutions over the past five years encouraged Honolulu Advertiser Prepress Manager Allan Six to choose the KODAK NEWSMANAGER Workflow System. The Honolulu Advertiser, a Gannett-owned newspaper, worked with Kodak five years ago to switch from film processing to CTP systems, which helped it achieve much greater automation.

With the KODAK NEWSMANAGER Workflow System, Six and his team anticipate a lot more flexibility when working with files across other systems within their organization.

“We appreciate that PDF workflow gives us one standard we can go to customers with,” said Six, who is looking to enhance the great success he’s had already with KODAK PRINERGY CONNECT Workflow. “Instead of receiving native files, we’re off to the races.”

The Honolulu Advertiser, a daily publication with circulation of more than 140,000, will now be using multiple KODAK Solutions in its prepress operations.

“I really like the software design of PRINERGY Workflow. We require a lot of local customization, but with NEWSMANAGER Workflow System, we’ll be able to be more self-sufficient,” said Six.

Dan Gelbart Named 2008 Reed Technology Medal Recipient
Creo co-founder selected by Printing Industries of America for his contributions to CTP technology

ROCHESTER, N.Y., and PITTSBURGH, PA, March 12 — Dan Gelbart, often credited as the father of modern computer-to-plate (CTP) technology for the printing industry, has been named the recipient of the 2008 Printing Industries of America Robert F. Reed Technology Medal. Gelbart will receive the award at a luncheon during the 2009 Technical Association for the Graphic Arts (TAGA) Annual Technical Conference in New Orleans on March 16.

Co-founder of Creo Products, Inc., in 1983, Gelbart developed a number of patented CTP technologies and was instrumental in the transition from an analog, film-based workflow to the current digital platemaking environments found in most service provider facilities. Gelbart’s light valve thermal imaging system, or thermal imaging head, is used today by all major manufacturers of thermal CTP systems.

“Dan shaped the digital prepress landscape with his inventions and unique insight into the needs of graphic communications professionals,” said Doug Edwards, General Manager, Prepress Solutions, and Vice President, Eastman Kodak Company. “Many of the high quality, high performance solutions on the market today benefit from his expertise, and Kodak has been very fortunate to gain access to Dan’s technologies through its acquisition of Creo several years ago. This recognition certainly is well deserved.”

During his career, Gelbart has been a named inventor on more than 70 patents for plate handling, direct on-press imaging, flexographic methodology, processless flexography, and more. Gelbart’s technological innovations and successes were integral to Creo’s growth. Creo was acquired by Kodak in 2005, and Gelbart retired from Kodak in 2008.

Throughout his life, Gelbart’s primary interest has been developing technology and products that combine electronics, optics, and precision mechanics. His work has been recognized within the scientific and research community, as well as in the graphic arts marketplace. He was awarded the B.C. Science Council Gold Medal in 1986, a GATF (now Printing Industries of America) InterTech™ Technology Award for Innovative Excellence in 1994, and the Gold Medal from the Institute of Printing in 1999.

Established in 1974, the Reed Medal perpetuates the memory of Robert F. Reed (1905-1973), “Dean of Lithography.” Reed’s contributions to the understanding of the lithographic processes and materials were perhaps the most significant and important made by any man of his time. Past recipients of the Reed Medal include Richard McKrell, John Crosfield, John MacPhee, Robert Bassemir, Harold Gegenheimer, and Michael Bruno.

KODAK Scanners Power DocumentATM’s Secure Mobile Scan Center in Digital Transformation of NASA Langley Research Center

With its 800,000 item card catalog now fully digitized and searchable, NASA’s Langley Research Center expects to provide new levels of productivity and collaboration to its scientists and engineers. In 2008, Langley utilized DocumentATM’s Secure Mobile Scan Platform, driven by KODAK i600 Series Scanners, KODAK i780 Scanners and KODAK i1860 Scanners, to convert its paper based reference catalog into a powerful, online research portal. With this system, Langley’s technical community can now access the entire electronic database directly from their desktop.

The Secure Mobile Scan Platform, also known as “The Scan Van,” provides corporate and government operations with an on demand solution for digitally capturing large volumes of paper based documents and records. The platform, specifically designed to deal with the critical nature of corporate and government information, is deployable to any location. Through the effective use of document imaging equipment and software, the platform provides clients with an onsite, on demand document service that meets regulatory guidelines, standards for privacy and security and eliminates costs associated with capital purchases.

„The DocumentATM staff has done an excellent job of converting NASA Langley’s old card file,” said Sue Miller, Documents Manager, NASA Langley Research Center, during the process in August of last year. „We are very pleased with their commitment to detail with scanning each card.”

The project required DocumentATM to capture specific information, including titles, authors, source and subject, from each record of the Langley Historical Aerospace Card Catalog. The index represents hundreds of thousands of aeronautics and aerospace papers and reports from all over the world. NASA’s Langley Research Center consistently accesses this information in its developments for furthering the exploration of space, increasing knowledge about the Earth and making air travel safer through aeronautics testing. Following its completion, DocumentATM initiated work within NASA and other government agencies on similar tasks.

“DocumentATM emphasizes three tenets to clients—security, speed and accuracy to minimize physical risk to documents, photographs and other hardcopy materials,” said Debora Mason, President and Chief Operating Officer, DocumentATM, Inc. “Scanning speed and high image quality provided by KODAK Scanners form a cornerstone to our business. These capabilities enable us to deliver top notch results when working with prized national treasures such as the Langley Historical Aerospace Card Catalog materials.”

Within its Secure Mobile Scan Platform, the DocumentATM team utilizes multiple APPLE MAC PRO workstations, servers, KODAK i1860 Scanners and an encrypted high speed satellite uplink to direct its high volume document conversion processes. The suite of i1860 Scanners enable the Mobile Document Scan Platform to capture more than 3,400 images per minute and each Mobile Platform holds the capability of scanning more than 2 million pages per month.

“This project demonstrates how an organization can utilize production capture to enhance a document based system through digitally powered improvements that improve ease of use and boost overall productivity,” said Tony Barbeau, Vice President, Marketing, Business Solutions and Services, Eastman Kodak Company. “Kodak will continue to work with service providers, such as DocumentATM, to develop capture solutions that help to maintain and protect critical information for organizations in both the private and public sector.”

At FOSE 2009, Kodak Promotes Digital Solutions to Improve Efficiency, Reliability and Security of Information for Government

Streamlined document workflows play a critical role in helping government agencies and offices effectively share information for present day decisions and retain records for the future. Kodak’s products and solutions that foster effective practices for government employees to organize content from paper based forms and documents will be available for demonstration at FOSE 2009 (Booth#1309), March 10-12, Washington, D.C.

“Government offices at the local, state and federal levels require effective document imaging tools to maintain the accuracy and security of data, manage the growth of information from digital and paper sources and mitigate risks, including data loss, user access and disaster recovery,” said Dolores Kruchten, General Manager, Business Solutions and Services, Vice President, Eastman Kodak Company. “Kodak works consistently across the industry to ensure that its portfolio of document capture hardware, software, solutions and service will meet the demands of government regulations and fulfill the need for on demand access to information.”

In 2008, offices consumed an estimated 114,000 tons of paper in Washington, D.C. alone. The generation of emails and informal memos also contribute to the vast challenges associated with policies, such as the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and standards from the National Archives and Records Administration. Recent survey results from Pitney Bowes indicate that records management plays an essential role in successful federal operations.

Kodak’s scanners and services played a key role for many government offices, organizations and agencies throughout 2008, including the General Service Administration, NASA and the State of Massachusetts’ Registry of Deeds. Kodak offers a wide range of document imaging options for the variety of diverse workplace environments within government offices.

Designed to promote document imaging in a shared workspace, the new KODAK Scan Station 500 combines the power and performance of a dedicated document scanner with the convenience of a multifunction device. Kodak’s networked scanner provides robust security functions for monitoring user operation and controlling file distribution. The Scan Station 500 features enhanced functionality with a large eight inch touch screen and a new user interface to improve ease of use. Kodak also provides an exclusive Voice Attachment feature that allows users to send personalized audio comments or instructions with scanned documents.

Emphasizing Kodak’s support for open source and building upon its previous participation in the OpenUSB Project, Kodak announces its contribution of a robust, open source and production quality scanning application for use on the LINUX Operating System called ScanTWAIN. ScanTWAIN functionality will support duplex scanning at rated speed on Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) based document scanners, like those available from Kodak. Kodak becomes the first scanner manufacturer to include LINUX drivers for a number of its document scanner models.

Additional enhancements to Kodak’s Smart Touch feature on KODAK i1200 and i1300 Series Scanners will also improve the user experience, allowing documents to be sent to predetermined destinations, including MICROSOFT SHAREPOINT Server, with the single press of a button.

The recently announced KODAK i730 and i750 Scanners increase standards for mid volume production scanners with the capability of scanning large volumes of documents at quality of 300 dots per inch (dpi) speeds normally associated with 200 dpi. This high performance quality helps to deliver true productivity in real world environments through enabling intelligent image processing functions, such as optical character recognition (OCR). These features support operations and applications that are both specific and repeated. To further increase productivity, Kodak is announcing at FOSE 2009 that all i700 Series Scanners offer automated speed enhancements which improve productivity by bringing the scanner elevator into “ready to scan” mode in half the time as previous versions.

The KODAK i1800 Series Scanners will show off new enhancements designed to increase operator productivity and return on investment of the company’s flagship production document scanners at FOSE 2009. The i1800 Series Scanners also provide customers with automated speed enhancements which improve productivity by bringing the scanner elevator into the “ready to scan” mode in half the time as previous versions. The i1800 Series Scanners will now feature a fragile feed mode to improve document transport for delicate or mixed sized batches.

At the FOSE booth, Kodak will be demonstrating new KODAK i9600 Application Software Version 3.0 for the KODAK i9600 Series Writers, for converting digital files to microfilm archival storage. The new software is fully compatible with MICROSOFT VISTA 64 Operating Systems. To increase efficiency in the archiving process, the software accepts, converts and writes to archive for a number of formats including PDF, JPEG, MICROSOFT WORD documents, POWERPOINT documents and EXCEL files. The new software is expected to be available and pricing finalized by late summer 2009.
