Iberbanda and Alcatel-Lucent demonstrate WiMAX Rev-e capabilities with a pilot network in Andalusia, Spain

Iberbanda has deployed with the support of its technology partner Alcatel-Lucent (Paris: Euronext and NYSE: ALU) its first pilot network using WiMAX 802.16-e (Rev-e) wireless broadband technology.

A specially equipped bus is being driven around Iberbanda’s R&D center in Malaga testing mobile Internet access and other services such as voice over IP or video surveillance. The bus is equipped with video cameras, screens, phones and PCs so that visitors can experience this advanced wireless technology.

“Iberbanda is a WiMAX service provider of reference and offering our customers the most advanced and useful WiMax-e services available is no doubt an unavoidable step for us,” said Carlos de Castro, Iberbanda Sales Director. “This year will be our starting point to extend our product and services offering for a market launch. We expect to ensure that our customers have the ability to take full advantage of this state-of-the-art technology.”

Iberdanda’s pilot consists of several demonstrations, including Internet navigation, VoIP telephony, videoconference, private networks and video surveillance, all while the bus is moving. This pilot will validate simultaneous use of a WiMAX network by a variety of applications based on the technology capabilities and the assignment of differentiated priorities in the radio interface for the different services.

In December 2008, Alcatel-Lucent announced that it was refocusing its WiMAX R&D efforts on the technology’s key market opportunity, enhanced wireless DSL (digital subscriber line), which includes data-centric mobility usage on netbooks and mobile Internet devices as well as residential and nomadic PC use.

Alcatel-Lucent is the commercial leader in WiMAX Rev-e; with 10 networks in service out of the 35 commercial deployments it has underway. Alcatel-Lucent has shipped more than 10,000 Rev-e base stations, supporting tens of thousands of paying subscribers. It is also a world leader in the provision of sophisticated project management, consulting and design services, applications and software integration and the design, deployment and maintenance of next-generation networks.

WiMAX Rev-e or WiMAX 802.16e-2005
WiMAX Rev-e is a wireless point-to-multipoint access solution for broadband services offering wide coverage and bandwidth up to 20 Mb/s thanks to the use of the most advanced radio algorithms (MIMO and Beam Forming) and intelligent antennas. This technology enables the use of high security networks with true mobility including at speeds of more than 100 km/h.

For the demos Iberbanda’s bus is equipped with WiMAX customer premise equipment (CPE) with WiFi functionality so that multiple devices can be connected in the route. The CPE is connected to a WiMAX base station enabling Internet access at 18 Mb/s download and 3 Mb/s upload speeds. An IP phone, a videoconference system and several cameras for surveillance are also available for the different demos.

Alcatel-Lucent’s solution
For this pilot Alcatel-Lucent is providing the technology and solution, including WiMAX 3.5 GHz base stations providing access to the network core and acting as a metro network hub, a WiMAX access controller enabling connectivity for users, radio aggregation and mobility management, and an Operation and Maintenance Center with a full scope of tools and applications for the network operation and maintenance. For the end-to-end tests performance Alcatel-Lucent will also supply a home agent, DHCP & DNS servers and an AAA server to manage authentication, authorization and registration.

Iberbanda’s services
Iberbanda offers a wide range of services such as high-speed Internet access, telephony, data transmission and network-based added value services. Iberbanda today has more than 40,000 customers in Spain, all of them in rural areas lacking traditional ADSL services involving a more complex and expensive deployment in rural areas compared to the WiMAX 802.16-2004 technology that Iberbanda has been deploying since 2004.

The solution only requires the installation of an antenna in a base station or sector – at distances not greater than 30 km from the point of accessing the Internet – and a receptor next to the customer premises – provided there are no physical barriers between the receptor and the base such as mountains, buildings, etc. This broadband technology is the most suitable solution to enable access in rural areas where other solutions are not as profitable. Additionally, it is highly cost-effective and reliable compare to the limited and expensive connections via satellite.

Iberbanda’s offering is defined by its quality standard and the customers will only benefit from the service where the appropriate service level can be guaranteed, a feature that is not usually offered with rural or satellite-based ADSL.

About Iberbanda
Iberbanda, a broadband communications service provider of reference for rural areas, offers a wide range of services such as high-speed Internet access, telephony, data transmission and network-based value added services that can be requested via its web external linkwww.iberbanda.es or the toll free number 1632.

Making use of its own radio (LMDS, WiMAX) communications network it offers advanced services by providing connectivity for rural areas where there is no broadband infrastructure available.

Iberbanda is a pioneering operator in the implementation of WiMAX IEEE 802.16-2004 for fixed services and one of the first WiMAX Forum members.

At Enterprise Forum 2009, Alcatel-Lucent demonstrates a next generation integrated solution for emergency call handling, based on PSA Peugeot Citroën eCall system

A Pan-European e-call service to save lives and reduce costs

Paris, March 5, 2009 – At the Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise Forum 2009 in Paris today Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) announced that it has joined forces with PSA Peugeot Citroën to demonstrate a next generation automated emergency call handling system for first responders. The solution, which is technically ready to be adopted by governments, shows a world premiere: an automatically located emergency call from a Citroën car is handled in a specially-adapted public safety answering point (PSAP) call centre and then transferred to a first responder dispatcher who uses state-of-the-art digital radio technologies (TETRA with WiMAX overlay) to assure that first responders have a maximum amount of information about an accident before arriving.

This is the first time that a TETRA-WiMAX overlay is demonstrated in a real world scenario and the first time automated handling of the emergency call is shown in a true end-to-end scenario that includes the first responder.

Attendees to the Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise Forum 2009 will see a live demonstration of eCall in car services through a series of integrated and advanced applications, from the automatic crash notification to a next generation public safety answering point automatically locating the accident on a map over a digital first responder network (TETRA) which is complemented with a broadband overlay based on Alcatel-Lucent’s industry-leading WiMAX 802.16 e wireless broadband technology.

The demonstration brings for the first time an end-to-end Web Services integrated flow of emergency data: from the car’s eCall system to the PSA Peugeot Citroën call center, to the 112 Call center, to the first responder dispatcher, and finally to the emergency fleet vehicle. Through this whole chain the accident context is transferred, qualified and progressively enriched to provide a quicker and more accurate intervention.

The emergency vehicle is equipped with the new TETRA-WiMAX broadband solution that enables it to receive and send high definition document such as the extrication map for a vehicle or the appropriate files for police interventions.

The benefits of such end-to-end integration – from call notification to call handling and dispatching up to the actual first responder – is a dramatic reduction in the time it takes for first responders to arrive at the accident, plus better information for the first responder, allowing him to reduce errors on both reaching the person in distress but also, for example, liberating him from the car. European Commission’s studies have shown that the systematic use of automatic crash notification has a potential to save 2,500 lives per year in Europe.

“Since 2003, we have fitted 650,000 vehicles with telematics in Europe and our emergency call service has already proven successful results with more than 3,500 calls received in the nine European countries where this service is opened. We are sharing our experience with the European Commission and the Members States in order to find the best definition for an efficient pan-European eCall. The ongoing transformation of the first responder communication systems to digital systems is a real opportunity for harmonization and better cross-country integration of these services everywhere in Europe,” said Franck Batocchi, Managing Director Telematic Services, PSA Peugeot Citroën.

Alcatel-Lucent has implemented numerous Emergency call mechanisms in both fixed and mobile operator networks and has provided technologies for e-Call Systems.

“By partnering with PSA Peugeot Citroen, Alcatel-Lucent extends the reach of its solution one step further so that people travel more safely on the roads,” said Michael Fabian, President of Alcatel-Lucent’s Vertical market services activities. “We are leveraging our deep understanding of requirements of government agencies responsible for public safety to integrate the best technologies and deliver an integrated, fully operational and robust solution.”

As a leading network integrator and solutions provider for the transportation industry, Alcatel-Lucent has a proven global track record for delivering solutions and the long-term project management required for some of the world’s most demanding and advanced Intelligent Transport Services deployments.

Legendary tennis venue Wimbledon transforms media and visitor communications services with Alcatel-Lucent solution

Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) today announced that The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (AELTC), home of The Championships, Wimbledon, has deployed Alcatel-Lucent’s communication solutions to provide more dynamic services for the media, spectators and staff. The phased deployment, carried out by Alcatel-Lucent business partner Actimax and managed by telecoms and IT consultancy MAC Systems, will also enable the organisation to improve billing accuracy, consistency and increase revenue streams.

The AELTC is responsible for staging the world’s leading tennis tournament, Wimbledon, host to more than 450,000 visitors – including more than 600 journalists – each year. Based on Alcatel-Lucent’s IP telephony platform, the new solution lets the media create customised user profiles, and allows easy access to Internet and phone services with handsets that deliver unique voice and graphical support in multiple languages.

Key users will also benefit from Alcatel-Lucent’s unified communications tools that enable them to easily participate in audio conferences and share documents online. In addition, the tools improve collaboration among AELTC employees and let freelance staff access system resources remotely.

“Millions of people worldwide rely on the media to follow The Championships, so it is imperative that we can provide them with fast, flexible 21st century services,” said Jeff Lucas, head of IT at AELTC. “Thanks to the new solution from Alcatel-Lucent, we will be able to provide more comprehensive support for our users, which should improve their experiences during the event.”

Prior to deployment of the new system, the media booked communication services through a variety of outsourced providers. This approach proved time-consuming and costly, with the AELTC having limited control over service quality or pricing. Now it can guarantee a high standard of service with a consistent pricing structure.

Actimax was responsible for the implementation of the new systems, which also included using Alcatel-Lucent’s contact centre technology to support the AELTC Ticket Office. Furthermore, by streamlining internal call reporting, AELTC has been able to rationalise the time it has taken to produce reports.

The project was designed and managed by MAC Systems, which recommended the Alcatel-Lucent and Actimax partnership to AELTC based on the two companies’ extensive voice and data experience. Actimax is now undertaking the second of the two main deployment phases, while future plans being considered by AELTC include the use of XML applications to feed real-time information – such as tennis scores and court changes – to telephone handsets.

“AELTC is utilising technology to transform its facilities and enhance the experience of all visitors to the venue. This is an ambitious project and given the range of solutions being installed, a phased rollout is the best way of meeting AELTC’s unique requirements and minimising internal disruption,” said John Massey, managing director at Actimax.

“World class venues like AELTC maintain their reputations through the continued provision of world class services,” said David Parker, vice president for Alcatel-Lucent’s enterprise activities in the UK and Ireland. “Alcatel-Lucent has a proven record in the leisure and hospitality sector, helping major venues and sporting organisations integrate their networks, people, processes and knowledge in order to improve service and become dynamic enterprises.”

Gwinnett County Public Schools connects homebound students with Alcatel-Lucent Unified Communications and Collaboration solution

In an effort to better educate the greatest number of the county’s pupils, Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS), has extended the classroom beyond its campuses to reach home bound students through state-of-the-art collaboration technology provided by Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU). With its new capabilities, the Gwinnett district, the largest school district in the state of Georgia, is embracing the digital age and creating a more interactive learning environment for homebound students, while dramatically reducing costs across its campuses.

The new Alcatel-Lucent Voice over IP (VoIP) solution will link 114 schools in Gwinnett, providing a major reduction in telephony charges for a district that serves more than 157,600 students and employees a staff of approximately 22,000. Gwinnett is also using the Alcatel-Lucent OmniTouch My Teamwork Unified Conferencing and Collaboration solution to better connect teachers and homebound students reducing the need for travel. The county hosts approximately 60 audio-visual calls per week serving 600 to 700 students who need to be educated at home.

“Previously, our teachers would either travel to each homebound student to provide a few hours of daily instruction or use an audio bridge to conduct group lessons. Voice-only instruction lacks the graphics and visual aids that help keep young, inquisitive students engaged,” said Rick Overton, Director of Telecommunications & Network Services, Information Management Division, Gwinnett County Public Schools. “Alcatel-Lucent’s VoIP network and the My Teamwork solution help teachers provide a richer learning experience — they can use video clips for a history lesson, interactive graphing for science or white-board instruction for math.”

The Gwinnett County Public Schools IP network already used a range of Alcatel-Lucent OmniSwitch Ethernet switches to provide the bandwidth and security needed by students and faculty for on campus communications. The more recent deployment of the Alcatel-Lucent OmniPCX Enterprise provides a new VoIP solution and allows the district to centralize its main voice switches at the district headquarters, extending remote call servers with back up circuits at each school building when fully complete.

Morse Communications, Inc., an Alcatel-Lucent business partner, worked as project leader to gather requirements, customize and install the VoIP equipment, manage service cutover and train the school district staff. Morse currently is providing full-time, on-site backup support for the school system as well as ongoing service, maintenance and consultation.

“Effective and efficient communications technology is critical when creating a dynamic learning environment that makes it possible for students to connect with teachers, fellow students and other knowledge resources safely and securely – anytime, anywhere,” said Tom Burns, who heads Alcatel-Lucent enterprise activities. “My Teamwork will help Gwinnett County Public Schools expand access to education beyond the four walls of the classroom. Our solution helps school districts reduce travel requirements and transportation costs with a virtual infrastructure that brings students and teachers together when they can’t reach the brick and mortar classroom.”

Additional information about Alcatel-Lucent solutions for education is available online.

Additional information about Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise Forum 2009
The main topics at this year’s event are built around helping businesses to Become a Dynamic Enterprise, one in which communications-enabled business capabilities supported by innovative technology and applications from Alcatel-Lucent help companies generate new revenue and reduce costs.

New technology/Cool Apps
Alcatel-Lucent will demonstrate recently introduced touchatag technology, an innovation from Alcatel-Lucent Bell Labs being commercialized by Alcatel-Lucent Ventures where the system uses near-field communication technology to connect objects with online applications. Using this technology, visitors at Forum will be able to simply touch specialized badges to receive audio descriptions of selected demonstrations through their mobile phones. Rather than toting around plastic bags full of brochures and white papers, documentation relating to demos and conferences can be collected with touchatag and stored in a “digital bag” accessible through a personal Internet page.

Additional highlights will include demonstrations of the award-winning OmniAcesss 3500 Nonstop Laptop Guardian mobility solution, new applications for the company’s unified communications portfolio, and customer testimonials of successfully deployed communications solutions linking the network, people, process and knowledge.
